Establish Priorities

Sketch of Mother and Daughter Looking at the Baby Giclee Print

From Homeschooling at the Speed of Life:

Your priorities will be different from your best friend’s priorities.  You must learn to sift out the things that don’t fit and to live your life based on your priorities rather than on those of others.

Living by your priorities means making some difficult choices.  A conscious choice of something that is beneficial to you and your family is better than a choice by default.  Sometimes it’s even effective to choose what you’re not going to do by eliminating something in your life or substituting a different activity.  If you attempt to participate in every activity available for every child in the family, you’ll be running so fast that your home will fall apart.

Your family priorities should dictate your school and outside activities rather than the reverse.  Be willing to look critically at the things  that sonsume your time: too much computer time, too little thought about household necessities, too many activities, too many days away from home, and so on.

If your home is out of balance, your enjoyment of the important things will be limited, and your home will not reflect the Lord.  The cultivation of both a family and a personal mission statement can help remedy this problem.

When you discover  your mission, you will feel its demand.  It will fill you with enthusiasm and a burning desire to get to work on it.- W. Clement Stone
